Detailed Maps of District 33:  Map 1 (b/w)

Maryland’s District 33 encompasses much of central and south Anne Arundel County, including Churchton, Crofton, Crownsville, Davidsonville, Dunkirk, Gambrills, Harwood, Lothian, Millersville, Odenton, and Severna Park. Prior to its creation by the Maryland General Assembly in 1650, Anne Arundel County was part of St. Mary’s County in the Providence of Maryland. In 1632, King Charles I signed the Charter of Maryland granting the colony to Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and husband to Anne Arundel, after whom the county is named, for twenty-one years until her death in 1649. With offers of land and guaranteed freedoms in Maryland, a group of nonconformist Virginia Puritans founded the first European settlement in present-day Anne Arundel County in December of 1649 on the north shore of the Severn River, opposite present-day Annapolis, calling it Providence. Nearly a century and a half later, on December 4, 1783, General George Washington traveled through the heart of District 33 along what is now Generals Highway on his way to Annapolis, where he formally resigned his commission following the American Revolution.

The population of Anne Arundel County is expected to experience continued growth in the twenty-first century, increasing from 485,800 in 2000 to a projected figure of 563,000 by 2030. In a 2010 report released by the College Board, Maryland high school seniors ranked first in the nation for a second straight year in passing Advanced Placement (AP) tests, with 24.8 percent of students earning or exceeding the passing score of 3 out of 5 on at least one exam, compared to 15.9 percent of seniors nationwide. Anne Arundel was one of nine Maryland counties to have at least a 20 percent senior pass rate on AP exams. The Maryland Renaissance Festival, which takes place in Crownsville, is the second largest Renaissance Festival in the country. The Festival employs more than 600 people during each season and reports average daily attendance figures of 14,700. It has twice been recognized by the American Bus Association (ABA) as one of the one hundred best events in North America.

Encompassing much of the scenic Severn, South, and Magothy Rivers and running along the cost of Herring Bay, District 33 is well known for its boating, crabbing and many other water sports enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
